What Do They Mean

24 Hour Sun Study

At your free on-site consultation, we will either set up a time-lapse camera to be picked up the next day or, if you are already aware of the sun's movements throughout the day, map the movements based on your description.

This allows us to design your garden components and plant your seeds/seedlings according to their individual requirements.

Soil Testing

Soil testing informs us of any toxicities in your soil, like lead. We can then decide whether to use a no-dig bed (if toxin-free), implement a plan for detoxification, or install raised beds.

Herb Spiral

A brilliant design that harnesses the power of vertical growing, gravity, and the unique growing needs of different herbs. The outcome? An efficient, space-saving herb garden that optimizes water and sunlight for maximum growth. The result is an efficient and compact herb garden that best uses water and sunlight.

Wicking Bed

A wicking bed is a garden bed created to save water and maintain a steady level of moisture for plants. It operates by utilizing a reservoir at the bottom of the bed to store water, which is then pulled up through the soil by capillary action, similar to how a wick absorbs liquid.

Vertical Garden Bed

Vertical gardening, often called a living wall or green wall, is an innovative gardening method that involves growing plants in vertical structures or containers. This technique is particularly beneficial in urban environments where horizontal space is limited. Vertical gardens can be installed indoors or outdoors, maximising space and contributing to improved air quality and aesthetics.

Key-Hole Garden Bed

A circular raised bed with a unique wedge-shaped cutout resembling a keyhole. This innovative design provides easy access to a central composting area, nourishing the entire garden. The sloping sides of the bed facilitate the natural flow of nutrients and water from the compost to the plants. Keyhole gardens are a cornerstone of sustainable gardening, celebrated for their efficiency and remarkable ability to minimize waste. They are particularly favoured in areas with limited space or resources, making them a perfect choice for anyone looking to create a thriving garden in any environment.

Mandala Garden Bed

Envision these gardens as not just functional but also captivating and stunning. Each one boasts a central element, such as a fruit tree, herb spiral, small pond, or fountain. Mandala gardens, especially those with keyhole designs, offer numerous edges, allowing for clever planting to take full advantage of diverse microclimates. For example, picture planting a hedge of perennials like rosemary, lavender, and perennial basil along the drier outer edge to provide cooling shade for other plants inside the circle during summer and trimming them back to invite more sunlight during winter.

No-dig Garden Bed

This is a revolutionary approach that eliminates traditional digging and tilling. By layering organic matter on top of the soil, you can create a fertile growing environment while maintaining soil structure, improving soil health, and reducing erosion.

Structural Landscaping

Hard landscaping embodies the enduring elements of a garden or outdoor space. These elements are crafted from resilient materials such as:

- Stone: This includes natural stone like granite, sandstone, or limestone, as well as manufactured stone products.
- Concrete: Used for patios, paths, and retaining walls.
- Brick: Often used for walls, patios, and pathways.
- Wood: Treated or engineered wood can be used for decks, fences, and other structures.
- Metal: Aluminum, steel, and wrought iron are used for gates, railings, and water features

Aesthetically Pleasing, Non Structural, Landscaping

Non-structural landscaping is all about embracing the natural world and design elements rather than relying on artificial structures. It celebrates the use of plants, sustainable materials, and eco-friendly practices to craft a breathtaking and environmentally conscious outdoor oasis.

Rain Harvesting/Garden

Rain harvesting involves collecting and storing rainwater for various uses, such as irrigation, household water supply, and flushing toilets. By doing so, you can contribute to water conservation and minimize water pollution.

On the other hand, rain gardens, with their natural beauty, are designed to capture and absorb rainwater runoff. Filled with native plants like grasses, sedges, and wildflowers, they reduce stormwater runoff, prevent erosion, and enhance water quality.

Compost Heap/Bin

Compost is a powerful, nutrient-rich organic substance formed by the natural breakdown of plant and food waste. It serves as a vital soil enhancer, boosting fertility, improving structure, and enhancing the soil's ability to retain water.

Worm Farm

A worm farm, also known as vermicomposting, is a powerhouse for turning organic waste into nutrient-rich worm castings. These castings are a game-changer for enriching your soil. But that's not all - you also get worm juice, a liquid fertilizer brimming with beneficial microorganisms and nutrients that your plants will love. Worm juice is derived from the castings (waste products) of worms and the water they live in.

Companion Planting

A clever gardening technique that involves growing specific plants together to boost their growth, increase yields, and ward off pests and diseases. By strategically pairing plants, you can harness the power of nature to attract pollinators, repel pests, and even provide natural shade.

Perennial

Perennial refers to plants that live for more than two years.

Annual

An annual plant is a plant that completes its life cycle in one growing season.
